Zevon is not about to write a "moon, June, spoon" song when there are rhymes like "mystics and statistics" and tunes to be written about rottweilers and headless machine gunners. He was particularly impressive on "Play It All Night Long," the beautiful, perverted tale of country living, sick cows and the impact of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" played at top volume. Considering that his records have always showcased some of the finest session guitarists in the business - Waddy Wachtel and David Lindley, for example - it shouldn't be too shocking to find that Zevon has himself picked up a lick or 10 along the way.

Smiling at the exuberance of what he called his "favorite band," with excellent keyboardist Patrick Fitzpatrick (told you they were Irish), Zevon was free to play quite a bit of guitar, which he did with semi-surprising excellence. With the five-member Something Happens opening the show and serving as his backup band, Zevon was able to draw from the youthful group, smiling as they pushed the older rocker to give his all. Zevon can take it as well as dish it out.
